Inspired by a more contemporary film poster for 2017 film “Wonder Woman”, this piece attempts to highlight the continuing “decapitation” of women in Hollywood film posters. The cutting off of fundamental features of the face, such as the eyes, leaves the female protagonist as a passive, ambiguous object; existing for the purpose of being looked at. The use of fabric in this piece is a nod to traditional craft practices historically and socially associated with women. This attempts to dignify the body through connecting the female form with women’s cultural heritage.
Medium: Fabric and oil paint on canvas
